Benefit for Make-A-Wish Foundation on May 10th is worthiest of causes

Over the course of my 40+ years as an oncology nurse (launched at Roswell Park) I had the pleasure of working with many charitable organizations to raise money for a variety of causes devoted to assisting people/families facing a diagnosis of cancer. While all were worthy endeavors, none was more impactful than the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity whose mission is to make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses.

There are few stressors in life as devastating for families as having a child with a life-threatening illness. Surviving from day to day trying to cope with all the medical, financial and emotional stress often leaves very little left in terms of resources for anything else.

Lost in all the catastrophic issues facing families with these issues is a child with little to look forward to and an uncertain future. Make-A-Wish came along in the early 1980s as a way to assist families in providing a way to make a child’s final days meaningful and fulfilled.

I’ve been blessed many times over the years with the privilege of working with families in this situation. One of the most gratifying parts of that process was being able to reach out to Make-A-Wish when a family needed help to fulfill the last wishes of a dying child.

Every single time I reached out, Make-A-Wish was there to make sure everything was done to create an experience for a child and family that would bring a moment of joy to an otherwise tragic situation.

Now we have an opportunity to help Make-A-Wish raise badly needed funds to support the cause. Through the gracious effort of Buffalo News’ Tim Graham, an event to raise money last year was so successful, they decided to make it an annual gig. Yay!

If you live in the Western New York area and are able to attend this worthy event, please consider doing so. Your $20 donation at the door will make a difference for families and most of all children whose last wishes can be fulfilled. Even if you can’t make it to the event, please consider making a donation anyway.

Sure wish I could join all of you personally for what is sure to be a fun evening of libations and entertainment, but I’ll definitely be with you in spirit and send in a donation as well. Thank you for your consideration regarding this very worthy cause.
